Ahmed Saad Mustafa Ali
Ahmed, a taxi driver working in the province of Beni Suef, was husband and father of a small child with a second one on the way. One of the first lessons he learned from his father was that manhood meant helping people in times of distress. He always assisted his neighbors whether in times of trouble or ease—in times of both sadness and happiness.
Ahmed watched the demonstrations on television with his family. He was not the type to protest, but deeply felt the injustice against the Egyptian people and said to his father, “How long will we endure this injustice?” His father’s replied, “Everything has its time, Ahmed.”
On January 29th, Ahmad went to work in the town of Beba in Beni Suef Governorate where demonstrations were taking place. While the demonstrations were chaotic, the police began firing live bullets at the demonstrators—wounding some and killing others in front of the Beba police station.
According to the eyewitness, Ahmed began transferring the wounded to the hospital in his taxi. He transferred a total of 8 people with 4 of them dying on the way to the hospital.
While transferring another casualty, the police shot and killed Ahmed. He fell to the ground and no one could get close to him as the police were shooting at anything that moved.
Ahmed’s body was eventually taken to the hospital. His father describes what happened at the hospital, “I was humiliated in order to receive the body of my son.” Ahmed’s father was not given the autopsy report detailing the cause of the death.
17 days after burying his son, Ahmed’s father agreed to open the grave so that a forensic doctor along with the prosecution could inspect the body and determine the cause of death.
Ahmed’s wife recalls the last time she spoke with her husband in an in an interview published in the media “I called him at 7 pm and I heard the sound of bullets around him. I asked him where he was. He replied yelling, ‘The men are dying! These criminals are firing livebullets at them! I am at the police station transferring the injured! Don’t worry, I’ll return soon! Stay at your father’s house!”
Later, her brother came to inform her that her husband was killed. Ahmed was survived by a widow and two young children. Ahmed father is taking care of the family now.
