Roma 25 Jan, 2022
La Repubblica reported that italin minister of Justice Marta Cartabia would fly to Cairo to get the address of the four accused agents of Egyptian seuciry who kidnapped, tortured and killed Giulio Regeni 6 years ago.
“We need to hear the voice and see the actions of our institutions. Now it’s the turn of politics”, Giulio Regeni’s parents, Paola and Claudio, told Repubblica at the beginning of January. Yesterday the institutions tried to take the first step. Prime Minister Mario Draghi met the Regeni together with the Minister of Justice, Marta Cartabia. She that she has made an important commitment: she is ready to go personally to Cairo to obtain the addresses of the four National Security defendants accused of the kidnapping, torture and murder of Giulio Regeni. Times are very tight. If there was Egyptian availability, the trip could take place as early as the next few weeks. Before 11 April when the next preliminary hearing is set in the court of Rome.
According to La Repubblica “The commitment of Minister Cartabia in front of Gulio’s parents, and their lawyer Alessandra Ballerini, is not an impromptu gesture. But the result of a political commitment that the premier (who had already met the Regeni in recent months) had taken from the first day of his appointment. Draghi has always told his closest collaborators that he considers it one of the first items on the agenda. Because Giulio represents that piece of Italy that the president considers the basis for the future of the country. This is why he had decided to have Palazzo Chigi become a civil party in the trial against the agents, in what was indeed a formal act but which was probably the strongest act from a political point of view in recent years on the Regeni question.
Today they will remembrance for Giulio Regeni in his home town Fiumicello for “Thoughts, words and music for Giulio”. OThe event will be broadcast live on Repubblica Tv and on the Youtube channel “Giulio siamo noi”.
